A romantic comedy that raise questions
The step from Broadway to Visby doesn´t need not be long.
With young talented musical artists and Sofia Ahlin at the helm Legally Blonde takes the leap.
Love and prejudices apply in New York as well as in Visby.
More than 60 youngsters aged 12 to 25 years are involved in the musical “Legally Blonde”.
Sofia Ahlin, director, producer, translator and extra mom when needed, says:
– This is a romantic comedy full of integrity, modern and up to date. There are so many ideal images we try to live up to just to be loved. Ideal that often is given to us by somebody else.
Questions about social status, economic status, gender and to be perfect in somebody else’s eyes are addressed in this catchy musical.
The lead role Elle Woods is played by three girls: Alice Jakobsson, Liv Sundblad and Elin Sedersten.
But it could just as well been a male. It could also been a non-binary or transgender person acting in the lead role.
– You are not allowed to that kind of changes in the musical, but basically yes – in this performance the issue of gender is relevant. We deal with gender issues from different perspectives. The show is more about integrity and humanity than it is about gender, says Sofia.
‘Legally Blonde’ is a comedy told in a quick pace that will have you think about how gender plays a part in our lives.
What do you want the audience to talk about after the show?
– That they liked the music and felt happy. But also raise questions about their own identity and their own thoughts about gender issues.
She says that the musical is “crazy fun”, that it highlights prejudices with a twinkle in the eye. Humour is a classic tool to pinpoint our shortcomings.
– You cannot stop yourself from laughing. If you have fun, you feel less threatened. Lecturing does not work, compassion and insight does.
Gotlands MusikalKompani provides initial training for young artists to learn not only acting on stage, but also so much more around the set.
